A Look At –  Adding Trellis & Creepers To A Garden Scene

In this ongoing series, we’ll take a look at adding some detail to a garden scene. Here we are going to use garden trellis & some flower material. The trellis kit can be found here:

https://www.scalemodelscenery.co.uk/shop/lx163-oo-decorative-trellis-panels-oo-4mm-176/?v=79cba1185463

For flower the material, we’re using two different coloured flower packs from Woodland Scenics, Also some fine green foliage material again from Woodland Scenics.

So first up what tools do you need?

Tools needed to build this kit are:

  • A small file or sanding stick.
  • Deluxe Materials Roket Card Glue AD-57 or a gel glue such as Bostick All Purpose glue
  • Cutting Mat.
  • Craft Knife with a sharp blade.

For adding the flower/vegetation Tools needed are:

  • Bostick All Purpose glue
  • Scissors
  • A small flat blade screwdriver for applying the glue

Let’s get started…

Cut & remove the trellis parts from the parts sheet. Sand flush any pips on the side edges.

Paint & weather to suit your scene or leave unpainted. Here we’re leaving the trellis unpainted …just the ones in my own back garden!!

Apply glue to one side of the trellis – here we’re using Roket Card Glue by Deluxe Materials.

Carefully place the trellis on your chosen location. Here we’re placing it on to six-foot panel & post fencing. Make sure the trellis is positioned so that it’s square & true on the fence.

Any overspill from the glue, wipe off with an old cloth.

 Adding the flowers/Creepers

For the creepers…no not those green ones in the computer game Minecraft! We’re using some Woodland Scenics products. We’re using the following for the flowers:

For the greenery we’re using:

First, cut off a section of the flowering foliage you want to use for your flowering creeper.

Do this over a mat or a sheet of newspaper to catch any loose bits.

Now tease out the piece you’ve cut off out. Cut down to smaller pieces if needed.

The loose bits save & place into a small container. These bits make for great scatter material for recreating wildflowers in a field scene etc.

Here we’ve teased out various sizes of purple & yellow foilage.

Decant a small amount of glue onto the blade of a small screwdriver. Don’t apply glue directly from the tube straight on to the foliage.

Apply the glue sparingly onto the foilage.

Using a pair of tweezers to hold the glued foliage, carefully place onto the trellis. Look at photos or the real thing to give you ideas on how to position the foliage.

Using some of the green foliage (various shades), carefully glue & blend in with the flowering foliage to suit your taste. Again look at the real thing for ideas on how to blend together to get a realistic look.

Here we’ve blended in some purple with various green foliage.

Mix up the flowering foliage colours to give a nice colourful scene to your model garden. Here we’ve mixed the yellow & purple with various greens.

Bulk or clump some areas of the foliage to give a bushier appearance as we’ve done here.

Woodland Scenics also do other various flowering foliage colours, so worth trying having a selection in your scenic materials box. Also check out the likes, of Noch, Mininatur, TPS amongst others for flowering products for the trellis.

If you have a go or already have a garden scene on your layout, why not send in some photos & we’ll feature them in the club.

Happy modelling.
