A Look At – Building The LX001-OO Laser Cut Five Bar Gates Kit

Building The Five Bar Gate Kit

In this article we’ll take a look at building the Laser Cut Five Bar Gates Kit. This kit is a very popular one and is a easy build which is idea for an evenings modelling. Ideal for many different scenes around the layout such as farms, yards, fields etc.

The kit Contents includes: One sheet of Laser Cut Kit parts, instruction sheet.

So what tools do i need?

  • A cutting mat
  • Roket Card Glue (By Deluxe Materials)
  • Craft knife with fresh sharp blade
  • Steel rule to cut against
  • Tweezers
  • Small nail sanding stick or similar

Lets get started…

Opening the packet you’ll see a sheet containing laser cut parts that will make up three sets of gates, & an instruction sheet on the reverse side of the front sheet.

Gate Parts

On the right is the component parts of one gate.

We’ll start with the first section circled in the photo on the right. Cut & remove the inner triangle pieces from the front vee frame as these are not needed. Having removed the triangle pieces cut out & the front vee frame as seen in the second photo on the right.

Now we remove the inner rectangle pieces from five bar section as shown on the right. Once removed cut & release the five bar section from the kit parts sheet. Lightly sand any pips off the the two parts shown in the second photo on the right.

Add a thin bead of glue as shown on the photo on the right. Add a spot of glue on the bottom of the Vee section. Carefully place the vee section on to the five bar section as shown in the second photo on the right.

We now turn our attention the second vee section part of the gate. The part you need is the one with the vee this that runs up to the cross bar. Cut out & remove the two triangle pieces that are circled in orange as these aren’t needed.

Next cut & remove this vee section from the kit parts sheet. Don’t cut the two parts marked with the orange arrows, these are the gate hinges. Take not to bend these whilst removing the vee section from the parts sheet.

Having removed the Vee part lightly sand flush any pips but not the two hinge parts.

Now run another thin bead of glue as shown on the vee part & carefully place on to the other side of the five bar section as shown. Make sure all edges are square & flush. The only thing that should stand proud of the sides is the two hings as shown in the second photo on the right.

Now run another thin bead of glue as shown on the vee part & carefully place on to the other side of the five bar section as shown. Make sure all edges are square & flush. The only thing that should stand proud of the sides is the two hings as shown in the second photo on the right.

Cut out & remove the three gate post sections as circled in the photo on the right. Again don’t cut off the to hinges & take care not to bend them whilst remove post section from the kit parts sheet.

With the three gate post sections removed & any pips bar the hinges sanded flush with the part sides, glue each piece to make a stack of three. The piece with the two hinges goes in between other two post pieces as seen in the third photo on the right.

Place some glue onto the two hinges on the gate.

Now place the gate so that the gate hinges sit on top of the post hinges. The bottom of the post should be level with the bottom of the gate. Wipe a way any excess glue from the hinge areas.

The last part of the gate to assemble is the other gate post. Cut & remove the three parts shown on the right. Again be sure to sand flush any pips from the sides of the posts.

Glue each of the three pieces as shown on the right to make a stack of three. Be sure to keep all sides flush & true. Wipe off any excess glue.

Either glue the post to the gate or when installing on the layout leave a slight gap between the post & gate.

The gate can either be left in it’s card state to represent worn wood, or painted with suitable colours such as AK paints weathered wood paint pack.

Repeat the build with the other two gates in this kit pack.

Happy modelling.
