A Look At – Building The LX027-OO Laser Cut Foot Bridge Extension Kit

Building The Foot Bridge Extension Kit
In this on going series we look at the LX027-OO Foot Bridge extension Laser Cut kit. The kit extends the small footbridge by half it’s length again. As this kit is modular other LX027-OO kits can be added to make even longer bridges. An ideal kit for an evenings or afternoons modelling session.
This kit Contains: One sheet of Laser Cut Kit parts & instruction sheet. For OO & HO scaled layouts.
We’ll be taking a look at making a small diorama with a small stream using this bridge in a forthcoming article.
Lets get started….
So as regular readers know by know here’s the tools & glue that you need:
- Cutting mat
- Craft knife with fresh sharp blades
- Roket card glue by Deluxe Materials or similar
- Steel rule or straight edge for cutting against
- Sanding stick
- Old cloth for wiping away excess glue
- Tweezers
- Acrylic paint (colour of your choice)
Familiarize your self with the parts on the kit parts sheet.
Building the kit
First cut & remove the parts marked with the orange X’s on the right. Discard the parts cut out in to the recycling bin.
Lightly sand flush any pips on the side of the parts. Now apply a thin bead of glue on one side as shown on the right.
Now place the send frame on to the glued first frame. Make sure all side & true, flush & square. Apply a bead of glue onto second frame & place the third frame on top. Again make sure all sides are flush, square & true. You should now have a stack of three.
Next glue on along the top side of the frame & place as shown on the right, on to the under (non engraved) side of the bridge deck. The two orange circles mark which end the recess are in the bridge deck.
Now cut & remove the parts marked with orange X’s. Discard these in to the recycling bin.
Cut & remove the two sections marked in the orange boxes.
Lightly sand flush any pips on the parts sides.
Now cut & remove the parts marked in the orange box.
Lightly sand flush any pips on the parts sides.
Next take one bar piece & glue on to each upright as shown on the right. Place the bars on one side only!
Repeat the procedure but this time place a bar piece on the opposite side upright. So you should have left & right hand pieces as shown on the right.
Add a small blob of glue below each recess as shown on the right. Take the matching side piece & place the foot of each upright into the recess. Raised detail upright should face outwards from the bridge deck.
Turn the bridge deck over & repeat the following: Add a small blob of glue below each recess as shown on the right. Take the matching side piece & place the foot of each upright into the recess. Raised detail upright should face outwards from the bridge deck.
Apply a bead of glue on one side of the U shaped pieces. Place the U shaped piece with the X on it, on top. Make sure all sides are true & sqaure. Apply a bead of glue on the side of the piece with the X on, then place the other U shaped piece on top. You should know have a stack of three with the X piece sandwiched in the middle.
Next cut two small recesses on the two corners as shown. These are for the posts on the other bridge to fit into (LX026-OO Foot Bridge Kit that we covered in the last article of this series).
On the LX026-OO bridge kit we built earlier, apply a bead of glue on the end of the two side pieces. Place the remaining two bar pieces on to the glue as shown on the right.
Apply a bead of glue along the end side of the bridge deck of the LX026-OO foot bridge as shown on the right.
Now stick the extension bridge on to the other foot bridge. Be sure that all lines up & is square & true. The ends of the rails marked in orange should touch the upright posts.
Apply a spot of glue on top of each post & on the end of the existing handrail.
Carefully place one hand rail on top of the glued posts. Make sure it butts up to the existing hand rail,
Repeat with the other hand rail.
The kit comes with two end deck sections. If you’ve saved one of these from the LX026-OO bridge kit, then glue onto the end of the bridge deck as shown. Otherwise use one of the two end bridge deck sections from the LX027-OO extension kit.
On one of the cross pieces on the deck frame, apply a bead of glue as shown on the right.
Place one of the bridge legs onto the glue. Make sure the legs are at right angles to the bridge deck.
Repeat the above with the second bridge leg. Again make sure it’s sqaure & at right angles to the bridge deck.
Once the glue has set on the legs either paint in your chosen colour or leave unpainted to represent weathered worn wood work.
Next job is to install on your layout. We’ll take a look at adding this kit to a stream diorama in a forthcoming article.
|Happy modelling.
