A Look At Building The Trackside Accessories Pack One Kit
In this article we’ll take a look at how to go about adding some trackside details with this Scale Model Scenery kit (Part Number AX006-OO which you can find here). This kit features trackside equipment boxes & relay cabinets as well as a portaloo type cabin. Scale wise this is for 1:76 / OO scales. The kit time wise will take around an afternoon to build.
The Kit Contents
The kit can be purchased as a download kit or as a pre-printed kit. The version you’ll see in this article is the pre-printed kit which comes with the grey board card already pre-cut by laser. The download version comes with a template layer for gluing onto card for cutting out the card shapes.
Tools you’ll need
- A cutting mat
- Sharp craft knife & spare blades
- Steel ruler / straight edge
- Glue stick ( Like Pritt Stick)
- Roket Card Glue
- Tweezers
- Small file or sanding stick
- Old cloth (for wiping excess glue away)
- Coloured felt tip pens (Dark Blue & light grey)
Lets get started…
We’ll start off with the Signalman’s portable toilet. So in the photo on the right cut out parts from the top section A, B, C, D & E.
Cut the parts free from the kit fret
Use a craft knife with a fresh sharp blade & cut each part free from the kit fret. Most parts will be held in place with two or four pips.
The parts cut out for the signalman’s portaloo
Having cut out the parts from the fret you should have the following parts on the right.
Sand smooth any pips on the side of the parts. Then glue parts A to parts A to form a stack of two.
Repeat making parts B to parts b, parts c to parts c, parts d to parts d into stacks of two.
Take stack A & stack B glue together to form a right angle as shown
Make sure that all the two recessed end sections are on the same end as seen in the photo. Take care to make sure that the two pieces are square to each other.
Take stack C & glue onto stack A with to form a U shape as shown
Again make sure that all the recessed end sections are on the same end as seen in the photo. Take care to make sure that the three pieces are square to each other.
Take stack D & glue onto stack B & C as shown to form a box shape as shown
Again make sure that all the recessed end sections are on the same end as seen in the photo. Take care to make sure that the four pieces are square to each other.
Now cut out the two sections of portable loo
Using a sharp craft knife or scissors carefully cut out the roof & sides of the portable loo.
Turn the two printed portaloo texture pieces over & score the fold lines using the back of the knife blade
Take care not to cut through the back of the texture pieces.
Glue using the glue stick the smaller texture piece & place part E centrally onto the texture piece as shown
Give the portaloo a coat of matt vanish to seal the model. Once dry place on your layout.
I’ve used an aerosol spray matt varnish to seal the model. This helps protect the model from sunlight & fading etc.
Now we’ll look at the Relay & Equipment Boxes
Carefully cut out all the relay & equipment boxes textures as shown.
As before cut & remove parts A, B, C, D from the kit fret
Use the craft knife to cut the holding pips & sand any pips flush on the kit part sides.
Glue Part A to Part B
Part B is slightly long than part A by a couple of millimetres, this is to give the raised roof part of the equipment box.
Again glue the other Part A to Part B & then glue the two stacks together with parts A showing on the outside as shown
Looking at the photo on the right you should have what appears like a raised section at one end.
Place the card stack onto the glued texture side piece as shown
Make sure the point of the raised bit end of the card stack lines up with the triangle on the side piece.
Now take the long front/back texture piece & glue with the glue stick. Fold over as shown in the photo on the right leaving two small bottom flaps. These then are folded flat against the bottom.
Take base parts C & D. Glue into a two card stack as shown
Make sure you leave an equal gap either side of the smaller part as shown.
Take the base texture sheet glue & fold around the card stack of C&D to form the base. Then glue the box to the base using Roket Card Glue as shown right.
Once the glue has set give the relay/equipment box a coating of matt varnish. Once dry place on your layout. The rest of the relay/equipment boxes assemble the same way.
