A Look At – Dave’s Rail Crane (Work In Progress)

Dave’s Rail Crane Project

If you’re a regular watcher of YouTube you may well know of Dave’s YouTube channel emoh8765. On his channel, you can see the ongoing progress of his layout Tinsley TMD. You can see Dave’s channel here:

A few weeks ago we paid a visit to see Dave & his layout. Whilst at Dave’s, Dave showed us one of his projects he has been working on which is a complete upgrade & conversion of Hornby’s 75ton Rail Crane. Dave has converted the crane from a steam-powered one into a diesel one. Just like the real ones that also were converted to diesel power from steam power. This website dedicated to the railway cranes is worth checking out as it provides lots of useful images & information on UK railway cranes:

So in the image below you can see what Dave started off with which was Hornby’s basic 75ton crane model.

Dave has been keeping me updated as he’s been progressing with the conversion project. Seeing Dave work is magic on the old Hornby crane is amazing to watch. A lot of work has gone into the conversion so far & includes things like changing the jib & making a replacement jib to the correct length, correct rigging gear etc. There is still more work to be done on the model which also includes things like working lighting. So below are some images of the crane so far, it’s still not finished but looks fantastic with what has been done so far.

Below is a gallery of some photos of Dave’s crane, Impressive work so far Dave.

We also got to see Dave’s layout Tinsley TMD. Which certainly brings back memories seeing the real thing in my younger days. So below are a few photos of the main shed area of Tinsley TMD. The buildings have all been scratch built & feature full detailing both inside & out, as well having interior lighting. Work is currently ongoing on the big marshalling area with a hidden return loop being installed under the yard. Other things include locos being repaired with some clever modelling making use of old Hornby, Lima non-runners. These feature roof panels open & engines & other interior details.

We’ll be doing a full feature on Dave’s layout once work has been carried out on the hidden return loop. In the meantime as a treat for club members, check out the photos we took during our visit below.
