Bachmann FIA Intermodal Twin Container Wagon

Bachmann FIA Intermodal Twin Container Wagon
We now take a look at one from Bachmann that was released back in 2001. The intermodal twin FIA container wagon. Like the real thing, the model comes as a pair of wagons which are semi permently joined together in the center. Built & used for Channel tunnel traffic are now used by EWS (now DB). The model features a metal deck which aids stability & good running. The model is offered in various liveries such as Railfreight Distribution & EWS. Available with & without containers. The ones that come with containers they are offered with a variety of containers such as 20ft & 45ft long containers, in many different liveries.
The model features sprung buffers, small NEM tension lock couplings & NEM coupling pocket, bag of extra detailed parts for fitting by the modeller, center coupling bar plus spare coupling bar. The model also features fine scale profile wheels & fine printed details. One thing to note on later models is that the center coupling bar has been shortened to bring the wagons closer together. The older center coupling bar is the longer sqaure flat type.
(Tip: The older center coupling bar is ideal for using on Oxford Rail Mk3a coaches. We’ve covered this in a previous article within the club).
We’ve had these wagons on our fleet from the first batch that was released back in 2001, we’ve noticed that on some wagons that the outer ends look to be starting to curve upwards slightly. Could this be a material used on the model fail? We’ll update further in due course.

Summary Hard to believe this model has been out for nearly 20 years. A good model with a wide choice of containers. Good runners with good level of detail. Maybe a one-off but ours is showing possible signs of age & material fail.
I have these for my layout, the detailing is quite impressive they don’t like tight radius curves either but overall they are nice to own
An impressive piece of kit ; enhances the layout.
It’s a good wagon & has done a fair few miles on the layout now.
