Building The KX01O-OO Portacabin Easy Build kit (OO 1:76 Scale)

Let us get started…

Tools required

What tools do I need? 

• A cutting mat
• Tweezers
• Roket Card Glue or glue stick such as Pritt Stick
• Black felt tip pen
• Steel ruler for use as a cutting guide
• Craft knife with a fresh sharp blade

The build

First look at the sheet of parts & familarise yourself with each part. Now carefully cut the main cabin body (highlighted in the orange box right) out from the sheet of parts. 

To Cut the part out use a craft knife with a fresh sharp new cutting blade & a steel ruler/straight edge as a cutting guide. As shown on the right.

You should now have the following part cut out from the parts sheet.

The next job is to scribe score fold lines on the non printed side. We’ve highlighted in orange where you need to make the score fold lines.

Using a steel ruler as a guide, use the rear blunt edge of the craft knife to gentle make a score line. Don’t press too hard as you could end up accidently cutting through the sheet!!

For the folding up of the kit glue tabs & part sides it’s worth using our SX002 Card Kit Assembly Jig 90 Degrees. These come as a pack of two & are ideal for use with assembling our card kits as well as other brand card kits. These can be found here:

For the next part of the build we’ll add the first of the options that come with this kit. We’re going to fit a different coloured door which will also add a bit of depth to the door way. If you don’t fancy swapping the door, please skip this stage & move on to the fold & glue section of this build.

First carefully cut out the door using the craft knife with a steel ruler as a straight edge as a cutting guide. In the photo on the right you can see the original door has been cut & removed.

On the exposed white edges of the doorway, use a black or grey felt tip pen to colour in the white edges around the doorway. As can be seen here.

Next select which colour door you’d like to fit.

Cut out the door of your choice.

Using Roket Card Glue, apply a bead of glue around the doorway aperture as shown right. 

Carefully place the door onto the glued area.

Tip here is to lay the door on a flat surface facing upwards & lower the cabin sheet down on to the door, which helps to align the door correctly with the doorway.

Next place a ruler or straight edge along the scored fold lines & carefully fold the glue flaps up against the steel ruler to 90 degrees. 

Now start to fold up the part sides. Here we’ve started with one of the end walls.

On the exposed white edges, use a felt tip pen to colour in the edges. Here we’re using a black felt tip pen to do this.

Apply glue to one of the end wall section glue flaps as shown right.

Using the SX002 Card Jig Assembly Tool, fold the long section (Roof or floor) on to the glued flap. Make sure that printed area at the edge of the flap lines up with printed area on the section it’s just been glued to. Try to avoid any white non printed are of the glue flap showning.

Next glue the opposite glue tab flap.

Apply glue to the remaining two small end flaps arrowed in the photo.

Place the cabin back on to the jig tool again, & fold the roof/floor into place. Again make sure that no white non printed area is showing, & that all folded parts are at 90 degrees to each other.

As before, fold the end wall into place & stick the glue flaps down inside the cabin. Make sure the end wall is at 90 degrees to other sides & that no part of the  white non-printed parts of the glue flaps are showing.

For the last two end flaps, instead of using Roket Card Glue use a glue stick such as Pritt Stick. Apply the Pritt Stick glue to the last end flaps. This will allow you time to final position the last wall into place. 

Now carefully fold the last wall into place. Make sure that the white non printed glue flaps are showing & that the last wall section is at 90 degrees to all the other sides. 

Any white exposed edges are touch up with a black felt tip pen or similar. 

The next option for this kit is the four base legs. Cut these four base leg sections out from the kit parts sheet.

Once the four leg strips have been cut out you then have two options on how to make the legs. Option one is to roll each strip around a 1mm rod then glue the end of it to stop it unravelling. Option two is to make up a box using the four parts.

Well be going with option two the box method.

Glue two of the leg strip sections together to form a right angle. As shown on the right.

Glue the third of the leg strip sections to the other side form a U channel shape. As shown on the right.

Glue the fourth of the leg strip sections to the last side to form a box tube shape. As shown on the right. Place to one side and allow time for the glue to set.

After the glue has set, carefully cut the box section into four equal lengths & touch up any white edges with black felt tip pen.

Apply Roket Card Glue on to one end of the leg section as shown on the right.

Carefully place the glued end on to one corner of the base underside of the cabin.

Repeat the same with the other 3 legs & glue them into each corner. Make sure each one sits true & sqaure. Allow time for the glue to set.

The next option is the windows with the security grilles & also the air vents. Select which ones you want & cut them out from the parts sheet.

The optional windows have curved corners, so these need careful triming with a craft knife.

Use a black felt tip pen to colour in the white edges around the windows & air vent grilles.

Use the likes of a glue stick like Pritt Stick to apply glue to the rear of the parts. The Pritt Stick Glue will give you working time to allow fine positioning with out damaging the texture wrap printed sides.

The last option is the signage that comes with the kit.

Cut out the signage you require. 

Glue the signage in to your chosen locations on the cabin sides & door. Make sure the sign is level & sqaure.
