Building The LX014-OO Next Train Indicator Boards – Part Two Freestanding Gallows (OO 1:76 Scale)

A Look At Building The LX014-OO Next Train Indicator Boards – Part Two Freestanding Gallows Display Board

For this article, we continue our take a look at the LX014-OO Next Train Indicator Info Boards. To recap: This kit has been in the range for a few years now & we worked closely with manufacturers of the real next train indicator info boards to get this kit as realistic as possible.  The kit is one that can be split over a few evenings with four different types of info boards included in the kit. As per all SMS kits, comes in clear package complete with instruction sheet & a sheet of laser cut parts.

The photo below shows the kit contents.

We’ll be looking at building the freestanding gallows board in this part two of four.

Let us get started…

Tools required

What tools do I need?

  • A cutting mat
  • Tweezers
  • Roket Card Glue or Super Phatic Glue
  • Sanding stick (Cosmetic nail sanding board is ideal)
  • Glue stick (like Pritt Stick)
  • Craft knife with a fresh sharp blade.

The build

Having completed the NTI display panels in part one, we’ll move on to the freestanding gallows. On the texture wrap sheet, you’ll need to cut out Wrap Sheet parts A1 & A2. These are the side/top/bottom & fronts texture wraps for the freestanding gallows display board. These are for use on individual platforms.

The image on the right shows the two textures A1 & A2 highlighted in the orange boxes. A1 is the texture wrap that goes around the sides, top & bottom. A2 is the display panel texture which goes on both front sides.

To Cut these out use a craft knife with a fresh sharp new cutting blade & a steel ruler/straight edge as a cutting guide.

Starting with the A1 wraps, carefully cut them out from the parts sheet using a craft knife with a fresh sharp blade. Use a steel ruler as a straight edge cutting guide.

The A1 wrap, after cutting out.

Next select which of the A2 display wraps & carefully cut out a matching pair, again use a sharp craft knife with a steel ruler acting as straight edge cutting guide.

Moving on the core parts sheet, cut & remove parts A highlighted in the orange box on the right. These will form the core base layer for the display sign. Any pips on the side parts, lightly sand them flush.

Take one of the small end pieces of part A, fit & glue it into position as shown in the image right. The middle slot should fit over the end tab on the bigger piece.

Now take the second of the small end pieces of part A, fit & glue it into position as shown in the image right. Make sure that it mirrors the other end part so that they both slope the same way. The middle slot should fit over the end tab on the bigger piece.

The other matching side piece is now glued & fitted as shown in the two images on the right.

Next, we fit the top & bottom pieces. You’ll notice one is narrower than the other one. The narrow piece fits in the thinner end, the wide one fits in the wider end.

Glue & fit both pieces. You should now have the core for the display box as shown in the two images on the right.

With the texture wrap A1, turn over & lightly score along the back two fold lines using the blunt edge of a craft knife or similar.

Next, lightly score the four vertical fold lines. After scoring, you should have the fold lines as arrowed in the image right.

Apply glue such as Pritt stick or similar as shown on the right, to the back of the A1 texture wrap.

Now place the core piece box assembly centrally on the glued texture wrap as shown right.

Next, fold up the sides of the texture sheet as shown right.

Now cut out a matching pair of A2 textures ( the destination signs ) from the texture sheet. Make sure they are cut square & true. Use a felt tip pen to colour in the white edges around signs.

Next glue & fix the A2 texture sheet destination boards on to the exposed sides. The time on the display needs to be on the lower narrower part of the body. So when mounted the display will face downwards slightly making it easier to read for the passengers.

The Gallows

Now we move on to the gallows. Cut & remove part E from the laser cut card parts sheet. Lightly sand flush any pips off the sides of the parts. For each gallows, there are three parts, the center part with the hanging frame & the two side parts.

Glue the parts in the order of the arrows to create a stack of three. So one side piece without the hanging brackets is glued & placed on to the piece with the hanging brackets.

Turn over the now glued stack of two parts, so that the piece with the hanging brackets is on top. Now glue & place the other side piece on top to create a glued stack of three parts. As shown on the right.

Next paint the gallows, give it a coat of primer paint. We’ve used a cheap grey aerosol paint can car primer paint. This we’ve followed up by painting in an aluminum colour. Again using an aerosol can spray paint from a local arts & craft shop.

Using Roket Card Glue or similar, apply a bead of glue on the underside of the hanging bracket as shown right.

Now place the display sign box on to the glued bracket. The wider part of the box should be at the top as shown on the right.

Once the glue has set, apply glue to the base of the gallows & place on to your platform.

In the next part, we’ll look at the roof/wall mounted next train display sign.

Happy modelling
