Building The LX215-OO Mallard Speed Record Commemorative Sign – OO/4mm/1:76

A Look At Building The LX215-OO Mallard Speed Record Commemorative Sign

Released earlier this year, this kit is another lineside addition into the Scalemodelscenery.co.uk kit range. The steam speed record was achieved by Mallard on 3 July 1938 on the slight downward grade on Stoke Bank just south of Grantham on the East Coast Main Line. It achieved the highest speed on the record-breaking run which was recorded at milepost 90¼, between Little Bytham and Essendine. The spot is marked by this lineside sign, which can still be seen to this day.

The kit replicates this sign in OO 1:76 scale & is an ideal addition to any A4 fan or anyone wanting to add a little something different to their lineside on their model railway. The kit is an ideal project for an evenings modelling.

Kit contents

The kit comes in a recyclable clear packet, which contains one set of instructions & a parts sheets. The two images below show the kit contents.

Tools & materials needed

You’ll need…

  • A sharp craft knife
  • Roket Card Glue or similar
  • Cutting mat
  • Black paint Acrylic or enamel type
  • White paint Acrylic or enamel type
  • Blue paint Acrylic or enamel type
  • Tweezers
  • Paint Brush

The paints I’m using here for speed are quick drying aerosol can paint by PalstiKote from the Range, including primer grey paint & Humbrol Railway BR Blue Enamel paint.

Carefully cut & remove the three parts of the sign from the parts sheet. A tip here is to cut through the pips from the rear side as shown on the right.

Lightly sand flush any pips on the edges of the sign frame.

Spray paint the parts on both sides & all the edges with grey primer paint & allow to dry.

Next spray paint the parts on both sides & all the edges with black paint & allow to dry.

Next Mask off the frame around the lettering & spray paint the letters on the front with white paint & allow to dry. If any black shows through the white apply a second coat of white paint to the letters.

Now paint the silhouette shape of the Mallard steam loco in blue. Here we are brush painting this part of the sign with Humbrol BR Blue enamel paint. We’ve applied two thin even coats of blue paint.

Apply a thin bead of Roket Card glue to the outside parts of the frame on the front side of the sign.

Carefully place one of the outer frames as shown on the right on to the glued area. Make sure all edges are true, square & flush. Wipe away any excess glue.

Turn the sign over & repeat with the rear frame section of the sign. Carefully place one of the outer frames as shown on the right on to the glued area. Make sure all edges are true, square & flush. Wipe away any excess glue.

And that’s it, jobs a good un! All that’s left to do is drill to small holes in your baseboard & apply a little glue to the bottom of the sign legs & insert into the drilled holes.

Happy modelling.
