Cleaning Loco Wheel Cleaning Tool

Keeping loco wheels & track clean is essential for the good running of trains on a layout. One such tool for wheel cleaning of powered loco wheels is the GM60 wheel cleaning loco wheel brush tool. This simple to use tool is available in two scales, N gauge & OO/HO Gauge. No other extra wiring is needed & is ready to use straight out the box. Let’s take a look at this handy essential tool for your loco maintenance.

The GM60 Wheel Brush

Out the box, this is what you get as seen in the photo on the right. This is the OO/HO version.

On the top of the tool are two rows of fine stiff brass bristles. This brush tool is long enough for a four-axle bogie on a diesel loco or 6 driving wheels on a steam loco.

You can lengthen the wheel cleaning brush tool by adding on a second wheel brush tool. The brush tool is designed to slot together with another GM60 brush tool. In the photo on the right shows two brush tools being fitted together.

In the next two photos on the right, you can see the built-in slot & tab that allows the brush to fit together with other GM60 brush tools.

On the underside of the brush is two metal strips, these are the contacts that pick up power from the railway track.

To use the wheel brush, place on to your railway track as shown on the right. Make sure it’s sitting squarely on the rails.

Next, place your loco on the wheel brush as shown on the right. Here you see i’m using a second wheel brush, thus covering all the driven axles on this Heljan class 128 DMU.

Hold the loco to prevent it rolling off the wheel brush. Turn up the throttle & the loco wheels will start to turn, the brass brush strips will scrape & wipe clean the loco’s driven wheels. Run the loco for a few minutes in either direction to clean the wheels.

After a few minutes of running the loco on the wheel brush, you should have clean wheels on all driven wheelsets on your loco. Next simply remove the wheel brush off the track & that’s it, job’s a good un!
