How To Build Catenary…the Wright Way!! (By Steve Wright)

Making & Installing Hangers & Registration

Steve Wright has kindly put together a guide, showing how he’s made his hangers & registration arms to fit on the LX050 Scale Model Scenery OHLE gantries. The end result looks fantastic so I’ll now hand you over to Steve to take you through this build.

Lets Get Started…..

The items you’ll need are:

  • Two Packs Of Precision Metals Brass Rod Part No: K&S #8161 & K&S #8160
  • Cutters
  • Plyers
  • Track Pins (for making a jig)
  • Soldering iron
  • Solder & flux
  • Thin solder or thin solid wire (for the insulators)
  • A file to tidy up cut ends
  • Humbrol Paint #73 Matt Wine
  • Humbrol Paint #Matt Grey
  • Super glue like Loctite 60 Second Glue (for attaching arms to the OHLE gantries)

Cut a piece of 3/64” Brass Rod, three centimeters in length (not 3mm as i’ve written on the image on the right) for the main Registration Arm upright.

Cut a piece of .032 Brass Rod, two centimeters in length (not 2mm as i’ve written in the image on the right) for the registration arm.

Cut a piece of 3/64” Brass Rod, two centimeter in length (not 2mm as i’ve written in the image on the right) for the Catenary wire support upright.

Cut a piece of .032 Brass Rod, one centimeters in length (not 1mm as i’ve written on the image right) for the Catenary wire support.

I made a jig to hold the uprights using a few track pins!

Tin the end of the upright to be soldered, along with the end of the registration arm to be attached.

Before attaching the arm, it needs to be shaped using pliers or similar, as seen in the following three photo’s below.

Now, solder the two parts together and tidy up the joint with a file if needed. As seen in the two photos on the right.

Using a thin piece of solder, wrap it around the registration arm around five to six times. As seen  in the three images below.

Repeat the process with the Catenary support arm.

Repeat the process with the Catenary support arm.

The finished article. I’ve so far, painted the upright’s and arm’s grey and the insulators in Humbrol #73 (Matt Wine)

That should be it. For fitting glue the uprights to the head span so the when the catenary / contact wires are attached they are above the center line of the track below. When attaching the uprights, the main registration upright is located on the leading side of the head span / portal cross beam, the catenary support is on the other side of the head span / portal cross beam. See the photo below for the finished item.

So many thanks to Steve Wright for supplying this article. Be sure to check out his YouTube Channel featuring his Layout Walstead Green https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPn4oxAZ1MvOEUg6m_MtP9w

Below is some images of the LX050 OHLE portals installed on his layout with a Bachmann class 85 running light engine under the wires.
