How To – Burnt Out Guards Van Cameo Scene
This how to guide was kindly submitted by Dave Gilmour in the Railway Modellers Facebook Group, and shows how to make great use of an old guards van model on a modern image layout.
So you’ve had that old guards van kicking around in your stock box for months and you’re really not sure what to do with it. It’s not suitable for use on your modern image layout now as they’ve all been withdrawn from service. Why not do what Dave did and make an excellent little cameo scene for a siding or out of reach corner of your layout?
The photos walk you through step by step, but here’s a quick run down of a few things you’ll need.
- An old guards van (or any other wooden wagon or even a coach)
- Acrylic paints (blacks, greys & dark browns)
- Downpipe / wire for the stove chimney
- A sharp craft knife or Dremel to cut out the sections which are to appear burnt. Please don’t actually burn it, the fumes will be awful!
- A small length of dowel to represent the stove.
good idea
I’ve got and Airfix / Dapol one I’m waiting to build (actually I have two, but I have other plans for one of them) and I’m going to do this. One use would be to shorten a siding and make my shunting layout resemble an inglenook shunting puzzle.
I have an old GWR Peco toad that still needs building up so may try this 😀
