Lineside Fencing – Guide To Assembling the LX006-OO Lineside Fence Kit

Kit assembly

Start by familiarising your self with the kit parts. On the photos on the right show the main fence panels, the second part sheet also contains the uprights & footstyles with the fence panel highlighted in orange on that sheet.

Cut & release the fence panels from the parts sheet. Tip: Cut the back side of the sheet. The front side of the sheet has the LX006-OO number engraved on it.

Any pips like the one circled on the right, lightly sand back to remove them. A nail file sanding stick is ideal for this job.

This is one section of the fence panel.

Next cut & remove the longer vertical strips. These form the side pieces of the main posts.

Carefully sand flush any pips off the sides of the verticle uprights.

Using Deluxe Materials Roket Card glue, run a bead of glue along the long upright on the fence panel as shown on the right.

Using a pair of tweezers, carefully place one of the long strips on to the glued section. Make sure that horizontal line that is seen on one side of the upright, is placed facing upwards & is at the bottom of the fence. This line is a marker to show how far to insert the fence when being installed on the layout.

The vertical side post piece should be true, flush & square with the post on the fence panel. Note the horizontal line on the lower part of the post.

Now flip the fence over. Run a bead of glue the same as before, along the long post as shown in the photo on the right.

As before, using tweezers carefully place the next long upright on to the glued area. Again the horizontal line needs to be below the main fence panel facing outwards.

Again as before, the glued upright should flush & square with all edges.

Move on to the next long post & add a bead of glue as shown on the right.

Place next long upright flush & square on the glued section.

So should now look in the photo on the right. Repeat the process of glueing & adding the long uprights to both side sides of the long posts on the fence panel.

Now going back to the parts sheet, cut & remove the smaller uprights as shown on the right.

Again carefully sand flush any pips on the part sides.

On the smaller uprights on the fence panel add a bead of glue.

Now carefully place the smaller upright on to the bead of glue. Make sure all is true, flush & square.

The fence section should now look like in the photo on the right.

Turn the fence over & repeat placing another small upright on the other side of the fence panel as shown on the right.

Now repeat the process of adding the smaller uprights on to the fence panel small upright sections. You should ne end up with one fence panel looking like in the photo on the right.

Repeat the process on the rest of the fence panels in the kit.

Joining fence panels together

To join the fence panels together, run a bead of Roket Card Glue along the end of the end edge as shown in the photo on the right.

On a flat surface lay the two fence panel sections to be joined & making sure both edges are square & flush push the fence panels firmly together. Hold & keep the pressure on for around a minute whilst the glue sets. Wipe away any excess glue with an old cloth.

Installing the fence

Measure & mark out the holes for the fence posts.

Next drill the holes that you’ve marked out. Use a drill bit around 2.5mm to 3mm for the single posts & a slightly larger one for the double posts.

Now add some glue into the holes. For speed, I’m using Loctite 60 Second glue.

On the long fence posts, you’ll notice a line circled in the photo on the right. This is the depth guideline for inserting the posts into the holes. Insert the post so that the line is level with the baseboard.

Another option is to cut the posts on the guideline & simply glue the bottom of the posts & place on the layout.

Now insert the posts into the drilled & glued holes. Allow time for the glue to set before doing adding the foot style.

Adding the foot style & signpost

Next cut & remove the parts shown on the right to make one foot style.

Now glue the two of the smaller pieces together to form a stack of two. Then repeat again with the other two pieces. You should then have two stacks of two as shown on the right.

Glue one of the stacks of two on to the underside of the long piece to form an L shape. Feed the long piece through one of the lower gaps in the fence. Glue the other small stack two onto the other end to form a U-shape. This is the foot style section of the fence.

The signpost

Cut the wire rod to a suitable length for the signpost post.

Now cut & release one of the sign sections from the parts sheet.

Carefully cut out two footpath signs from the instruction sheet. You’ll want one left-hand & one right-hand sign. Glue these on to the card base.

Now drill a hole & add a spot of glue into the hole then insert the wire rod post.

Next glue the direction sign onto the post.

Recap

So to recap: If you don’t want to drill your layout cut the posts as shown on the guideline marked on the post.

Need to shorten the fence? Simply cut & remove the horizontal bars close as you can along the edge of the post as shown on the right. Sand flush any cut parts that aren’t flush. Alternatively, if you want to add another fence section running off at another angle, cut & remove a post & glue the ends on the horizontal bars on to the fence as shown in the example on the right.

The fence can be left unpainted to represent weathered wood as we have done here or paint in suitable colours using artist acrylic paints. In the next article, we’ll show how to install the fence on a slope & uneven ground.
