Lineside Fencing – Guide To Installing the LX006-OO Lineside Fence Kit On Hilly Terrain

Installing the fencing.

Here you see some fence sections that I previously assembled & the hilly/uneven landscape diorama section. I’ve used Woodland Scenics Shaper Sheet & Shaper Sheet plaster to form the hilly/uneven terrain on a small piece of MDF.

A quick recap of the fence posts, on each long post, is height marker. When inserting the fence on to the landscape make sure this line is level with the ground. It also serves as a cutting guideline for those who don’t want to drill holes in their layout. Simply cut along the guideline & glue post to the layout.

Starting at the end of the fence section mark out where each fence post hole is to be drilled.

Work your way along the fence & marking out each post hole as you go.

To adjust the fence so it follows the hilly/uneven profile of the terrain:

• Hold one post in one hand
• With your other hand hold, the next post along
• Now carefully pull up or down one of the posts whilst firmly holding the second post
• Pull up or pull down on the fence till the fence is at the chosen angle to match the slope of the hill

Next drill the fencepost holes using a 3mm drill bit.

Test fit the fence into the holes.

If fence doesn’t quite follow the profile of the terrain, remove fence & make any adjustments as before by holding & moving the posts to adjust the angle of the horizontal bars. Test fit again to check fence follows the profile of the terrain.

If you can’t drill a deeper hole say due to wiring or some obstruction, mark the post as shown on the right.

Remove fence & cut post as shown on the right.

Before reinserting the fence, apply some super glue or similar to each hole.

Next reinserting the fence, hold the fence upright whilst the glue sets as shown on the right. Use firm pressure to stop the adjusted fence posts springing up whilst the glue sets.

Leave time for the glue to fully set before applying any scenic scatter materials.

Once the glue has set it’s time to apply the land cover materials. For the diorama scene on the right the following method was used:

• Paint the bare plaster in earth brown colours. Woodland Scenics Earth Under Coat paint has been used here with two coats applied.
• Whilst the second coat of earth paint was still wet, fine earth scatters material has been applied & time is given for the paint to dry.
• Next, a Deluxe Materials Scenic Spray glue applied/sprayed on to the earth scatter. Various fine & coarse turf scatters were then applied in various areas around the diorama.
• Another spray of Deluxe Materials Scenic Spray glue applied/sprayed on to the diorama. Using a Noch/Gaugemaster Static Grass Puffer Bottle 2mm static grasses (Summer & late summer blend) was used to apply the grasses to the scene.
• Following yet another spray of Scenic glue to the scene, longer 4mm to 6mm late summer/dead patchy static grass was then applied using the static grass puffer bottle.
• Time was then given for the glue to set.
• Bushes & foliage & sheep were then glued at various points around the diorma.
• A light spray again using scenic glue was applied over some sections of the grass/turf. This was followed by a light sprinkling of fine yellow scatter applied to the glued area. This then gives the effect of wildflowers growing amongst the grass & bushes.
• A final coating of cheap non-perfumed hair spay is given over the whole scene.

Change of direction

To change the sideways direction of the fence:

• Hold one post firmly with one hand
• Hold the horizontal rails of the fence with your other hand
• Carefully bend the rails sideways around 45 degrees at the point the rails enter the post

This will allow you to recreate more natural looking fences that aren’t in a straight line. The photo on the right shows one fence section that has been bent to recreate a change of direction.
