Loch Milford and Pepper Lane Ballast Trains…Bogie Ballast Hopper Rake

At the moment I have 2 Rakes of Ballast Hoppers Made up of Wagons form various manufacturers both RTR and Kit Built and in this article I will be looking at the wagons that make up the Bogie Hopper rake.

1. BR ZTO 20ton Brake Van DB950718

Built from the Venerable Airfix Kit (of which i still have 5 in the kit stash) it has Romford wheels and bearings and finished in Dutch Livery. Transfers are from Model Master and fox and the wagon was weathered with Soft Pastels.

2. YGB Seacow Ballast Hopper DB98007

Just a straight respray of the Hornby model with Transfers again from Model Master and Fox. It needs weathering badly

3. YHA Whale Ballast Hopper DB982379

Built from the Cambrian Kit with Romford Bearings and Dapol wheels the model is finished in weathered Dutch Livery with Model Master and Fox Transfers

4. YHA Whale Ballast Hopper DB982352

Built from the Cambrian Kit with Romford Bearings and Dapol wheels the model is finished in weathered Dutch Livery with Model Master and Fox Transfers

5. YGB Seacow Ballast Hopper DB980000

Converted from the Cambrian Models Walrus Hopper Kit the model has Gloucester Bogies from the same firm fitted with Romford bearings and wheels. Fitted with Scratch Built Protective Hoods.Finished in Engineering Olive Livery with Model Master and Fox transfers it needs weathering and brake wheels and steps adding.

6. YGH Sealion Ballast Hopper No DB982782

Simplu a Hornby model which needs a good dose of weathering

7. YGB Seacow Ballast Hopper

Lima Model Repainted in Dutch. It does need finishing with Handrails,Transfers and Weathering when I finally get around to it.

8. YGH Sealion Ballast Hopper No 982492

A Hornby model repainted in Engineers Olive Livery with Model Master and Fox Transfers.

9. ZUV Shark Ballast Plough Van No DB9938890

Built from the Cambrian Models kit with Romford Bearings and Dapol wheels and finished in weathered Dutch Livery with Model Master and Fox Transfers

 

The full rake runs very reliably but being a mix of ready to run and kits some experimentation had to be carried out with wagon weight to get it just right. The kits are weighted with alloy wheel weights in the actual chutes of the wagons to get the weight as near to the center of gravity as possible

There are more wagons to go into this rake in the future as i have 3 more Cambrian kits ub the stash…another Whale and 2 of the old Seacow kits which will need new Gloucester Bogies to replace the ones in the kits as they were rubbish and impossible to get running reliably.
