Modelling Tip Of The Day – 7
This Modelling Tip Of The Day is a new article series, in which we’ll be posting a modelling tip that may be of use to the newbie right up to the seasoned modeller.
Today’s tip is:
Ballast colours
Ballast colour is never just grey, it’s a blend of various different colours & sizes. Depending on what region & area you’re modelling will have a bearing on what colour ballast to use. Take a look at the real thing & see what colour variations there are. Ballast colours depend on the region, new or old ballast, how it’s weathered, & how much traffic the line carries etc. Take reference photo’s of the real thing to give you ideas & to give you a pictorial guide to work to.
Model Ballast comes in many sizes, grades & colours. Don’t be afraid to have a go at mixing up various ballast sizes & colours. In the header photo, can be seen a mixture of ballast colours etc. Not how the weathering has also affected the look of the trackwork.
In this link can be seen two different sizes ranges of ballast OO & N gauge https://www.scalemodelscenery.co.uk/?s=dcc+concepts+ballast&post_type=product&v=79cba1185463
If modelling OO, try blending the two scale sizes together to give an even more realistic looking ballast.
