Scale Model Scenery Kit Build Guides

KX056-OO Coal Staithes Kit

In this Scale Model Scenery kit build guide, we take a look at another kit from our range, this time it’s the turn of the KX056-OO Coal Staithes Kit. This kit has been in our both our download & pre-printed kit ranges for a good few years now. The pre-printed OO scale version is a pre-laser cut which speeds up the build time & assembly.

The download version can be found in both OO & N scale in our online model club oldwp.railwaymodellers.com & is available in the club V.I.P members download area here:

https://oldwp.railwaymodellers.com/product/coal-staithes-ooho/

A OO scale pre-printed version which we’ll be looking at in this guide is available over on our main website here:

Tools Needed

Tools needed are as follows:

  • Cutting  Matt
  • Craft knife with a new cutting blade
  • Steel ruler for cutting against
  • Roket card glue
  • Glue stick (Pritt Stick or similar0)
  • Sanding stick (Cosmetic nail sanding stick will do)

Kit Contents

The kit is supplied in standard clear packaging & comes with a sheet laser cut parts & also a sheet containing instructions & printed texture wraps. The two photos right show the kit contents.

The Build

Let us get started…

Start by cutting the three part A sidewall parts from the parts sheet (As highlighted by the orange X’s in the photo right). The fourth part A is an optional extra sidewall piece.

Light sand flush any pips on the part ‘A’ sides using the sanding stick.
Next, part B on the texture wrap sheet needs to be cut into 6 pieces.
In the photo right, the arrows indicate shows how part B has to be cut into six.
As shown in the photo right, glue two of the part ‘B’ s on to the front two leading edges of the part ‘A’.
As shown in the photo right, three of the part ‘C’ s have to be cut & removed next from the texture wrap sheet. The fourth part C is for the optional extra sidewall baselayer part B.
On each of the part ‘C wraps, cut as indicated by the two thin orange lines down to the thicker orange line.
Next, cut out the part ‘C’ wraps as shown in the photo right.
Using the glue stick apply glue to the rear non printed side of the wrap. Place part B on to the glued wrap as shown in the photo right. Make sure the rear tall edge sits flush with the edge of the wrap.
Using the rear blunt edge of the craft knife, score a fold line along with wrap where it meets the baselayer. As shown in the photo right.
Glue & fold the wraps over the top edges & front wall edge as shown in the photo right.
Next, cut out texture wraps part ‘D’ as shown in the photo right.
Apply glue using the glue stick to the rear of the texture wrap ‘D’s. Stick into position on to the remaining uncovered side of part A, as shown in the photo right.

Next cut & remove part ‘E’ from the parts sheet. Lightly sand flush any pips on the part sides.

Next cut & remove parts ‘F’ & ‘G’ from the texture wrap sheet.

On part ‘F’, score three fold lines as indicated between the orange arrows.

Now apply glue to one side of base layer part E & stick on to texture wrap part F as shown in the photo right.

Glue & fold the part F wrap glue flaps over the edges of part E as shown in the photo right.

Next, Glue texture wrap part G into place on the remaining uncovered side of part E base layer. As shown in the photo right.

Apply a bead of Roket card glue along the rear upright edge on one of the wall pieces, as shown in the photo right.

Using our SX002 corner jig tool, butt up the rear long wall piece to the corner of the jig tool. Next, fit the glued sidewall so it sits on the front face wall of the rear wall. The SX002 jig tool will help keep the two parts sitting at 90 degrees to each other.

Now repeat the process at the other end, with gluing into place the other end wall to the rear wall. Again use the SX002 jig to align the two parts together keeping the at 90 degrees to each other.

Now glue the third wall to the rear wall somewhere in the middle as shown in the photo. If using the extra fourth wall, glue that to the rear wall in your chosen desired position.

At this point, you can glue & fix the coal staiths wall directly on to your layout. Otherwise, you can use the optional base sections.

Cut & remove the two baselayer sections from the base layer parts sheet. Lightly sand flush any pips on the base layer parts edges. Using Roket Card Glue apply glue to one side on one of the base layers. Then stick the other base layer on top making sure that all edges are square true & flush to each other.

Cut out the base texture wrap layer as shown in the two photos right.

Next score four fold lines as shown in the photo right.

Using the four scored fold lines as a positioning guide, apply glue (using the glue stick) to the rear non printed side of the base texture wrap, then place the base layer on to the glued wrap.

Glue & fold the four glue flaps down on the base underside as shown in the photo right.

Time to fix the walls to the base layer. Apply a bead of Roket Card Glue along the unwrapped bottom edge of the walls, as shown in the photo right.

Then stick the walls on to the base layer as shown in the photo right.

Any white exposed edges on the wraps, touch in with a felt tip pen, paint or a crayon as shown in the photo right.

Next, give the staithes a spray coat of Matt Spray Varnish, the likes of Testors & Humbrol etc do aerosol can spray matt varnish. This will seal & protect the texture wrap layer from UV light & fading. (Not shown in the photos)

Adding Coal

To finish off we’ll now add coal scatters. Apply some PVA glue within the areas between the out walls & center wall, as shown in the photo right.

Next, sprinkle some coal scatter material of your choice directly on to the PVA glue & allow the glue to then set. Once the glue has set, reapply more glue & sprinkle more coal scatter on if needed.

In the photo right, the coal has been applied to the glue & the glue is starting to set. The glue will set clear. Further weathering can be applied using weathering powders etc as required.

This now concludes the build of this kit.
