The Kit Contents

The kit comes supplied as many of our kits do, in a clear plastic wallet. The kit comes supplied with instructions & two laser cut parts sheets. The photos right & below show the kit contents. 

Please Note: In the photos, you’ll see one complete access stairs missing. This one was built earlier for our exhibition kit display stand. The kit comes with enough parts to make four sets of access stairs. 

Let’s get started…

We’ll start by removing the highlighted parts from the parts sheet shown in the photo right, these being the stair treads & the two stairs sides.

Release the parts from the parts sheet by carefully cutting through the holding pips. As highlighted by the orange circles in the two photos right.

Any pips (highlighted in the orange circle in the photo right) on the part edges, lightly sand flush to remove them. 

For the next part, you’ll need Deluxe Materials Roket Card Glue or Deluxe Materials Super Phatic Glue, & a pair of tweezers. 

Take one of the stair side parts & apply a small amount of Roket Card Glue / Super Phatic glue as shown in the photo right, next to the second recess from the top.

This next stage, we recommend taking your time to do for best results.

Take one of the stair treads & using the tweezers, insert it into the recess with the glue as shown in the photo right. Make sure that the ‘T’ shape part of the stair tread is flush up against the back of the recess. Make sure the stair tread sits at 90 degrees. Allow time for the glue to set & try not to knock the stair tread.

 Please take your time for the best results.

For extra strength, apply an extra bead of Rocket Card Glue / Super Phatic Glue along the underside of the stair tread. Allow time for the glue to set.

Repeat the process with the fitting & gluing of the next stair tread. Glue, insert, glue the stair tread on to the third recess up from the bottom, as shown in the photo right. Again make sure the stair tread sits at 90 degrees as shown in the photo right.

Repeat the process with the fitting & gluing of the next stair tread. Glue, insert, glue the stair tread on to the bottom recess, as shown in the photo right. Again make sure the stair tread sits at 90 degrees as shown in the photo right.

Allow time for the glue to set before moving on to the next stage.

The larger kit parts sheet has two long slots included on it. These are the jig for holding both sides of the steps in alignment. We’ll use this jig for the next stage of the kit build. The jig is highlighted in the photo right.

Taking the other side piece of the steps, apply a small amount of Roket Card Glue / Super Phatic Glue next to the same recesses (as shown in the photo right) as the previous other side piece.

Now inset the three stair treads into the side piece that has just been glued. Make sure each stair tread is fully seated correctly on each recess. With both side pieces glued together, use the jig as shown in the photo right to hold both sides of the steps in alignment whilst the glue sets. 

 Please take your time for the best results.

As before, apply a small amount of Roket Card Glue to the underside of stair treads to help reinforce the glue joint. As shown in the photo right. Allow time for the glue to set.

With the glue on the fitted stair treads set, we’ll move on to fitting the rest of the remaining stair treads. Using a pair of tweezers to hold a stair tread at nearly 90 degrees, then once past & clear of the uprights on the handrails, rotate the stair tread 90 degrees & carefully insert fully into the recesses. As shown in the two photos right.

With the stair tread inserted, hold the stair tread in place & apply a small bead of Roket Card Glue / Super Phatic Glue to the underside of the step at each end. Repeat the process with the remaining stair treads bar the top one.

The top stair tread, apply a small amount of Roket Card Glue / Super Phatic Glue on to each side of the non-laser engraved side, as shown in the photo opposite right. Then place the stair tread in position on the top of the stairs, as shown in the second photo opposite right.

From the small parts sheet, cut & remove two of the stringer cover side pieces, as shown in the photo right.

Apply a thin even coat of Roket Card Glue / Super Phatic Glue as shown in the photo right, along the side of stair stringer.

Take one of the stair stringer covers & place on to the glued area on the side of the stairs. Make sure all edges are true flush & square with each other.

Turn the stairs over & repeat the process & glue the other stair stringer cover into place. Make sure all edges are true flush & square with each other.

The last piece to fit is the leg brace piece. Cut & remove from the parts sheet & lightly sand flush any pips on the brace piece sides. The first photo opposite right shows where the part is located on the parts sheet.

Apply a small bead of Roket Card Glue / Super Phatic Glue to either end of the brace piece as shown in the photo opposite right. The stick into place on the legs as shown in the second photo opposite right.

That concludes the assembly of the stairs/steps.

Painting

For painting, we are using aerosol can primer paint & acrylic aluminum effect aerosol spray can paint. Available from arts & craft shops, model shops, online etc. 

The stairs/steps are given an even thin coating of primer paint & then left to dry.

Next, the stairs/steps were given a thin even coating of the acrylic aluminum paint & left to fully dry. Once dry apply suitable weathering if required & install on to your layout.
