Scale Model Scenery Kit Build Guides

Roller Shutter Door Kits (LX276 to LX280)

In this Scale Model Scenery kit build guide, we take a look at the Roller Shutter Door Series from our range. The LX276-OO, LX277-OO, LX278-OO, LX279-OO, LX280-OO is a series of 1:76 / OO scale Laser Cut & Laser Engraved kits. These are easy to build and paint. They can be installed behind a suitably sized cut-out in your buildings &/or glued directly to your building wall to give an impression of a closed roller shutter door. Typical uses for this series of kits are as follows which include… shop fronts, industrial buildings, factories, gated entrances etc. We currently have five different sized options in OO/1:76 scale to choose from, which are as follows:

Let’s get started…

Tools you’ll need is as follows:

  • SX002 Corner jig tool (available here: https://www.scalemodelscenery.co.uk/sx002-card-kit-assembly-jig-90-degrees-1869-p.asp )
  • Tweezers
  • Roket Card Glue or Super Phatic Glue by Deluxe Materials (Or similar)
  • Sanding stick (A cosmetic nail sanding board is ideal & can be found in the likes of your local supermarkets etc)
  • Cutting mat
  • Cloth for wiping away any excess glue
  • Primer paint & acrylic paint ( Aersol Spray Paint Can Type)

The assembly of all these roller shutter door kits is the same as what we will now take you through with this walkthrough guide. We’ll look at one of the wider door kits which is the LX280-OO Roller shutter door kit. All the roller shutter door kits include the optional external top roller shutter top box & can be assembled with or without this. We’ll be showing this walkthrough with the optional top roller shutter box.

The roller shutter door kit LX280-OO. In the photo right, we show the kit contents which are supplied with an instruction sheet & one sheet of laser cut & laser engraved parts.

The parts marked with an orange X make up one doorway kit. (Please note the parts sheet includes two spare bar strips as extras).

Turn the parts sheet over so the side with the laser engraved door details is facing down. Now carefully cut through the pips that are holding the parts on to the parts sheet. Use a craft knife with a sharp blade (avoid using a blunt blade as this could dame the kit parts when cutting them free from the parts sheet).

Lightly sand flush the part sides to remove any of the pips. Take extra care when sanding the U shape doorway frame, so as not to break it.

After cutting & releasing the parts from the parts sheet, the following parts make up one door.

Apply a thin even bead of Roket Card Glue to the U shaped frame as shown in the photo right.

Use the SX002 Corner Jig Tool for aligning the door frame & roller shutter door parts, this will help keep everything square & true.

Using the jig tool as a guide tool, carefully place the glued U shaped frame on to the roller shutter door. Take care when doing this to make sure that all edges align up true, flush & are square. The photo right shows the two parts after being glued together. Be sure to wipe away any excess glue using an old cloth.

Next, glue the four strip pieces so that they are in a stack of four as shown in the photo right. Again use the SX002 jig tool to help align the four parts so that all the edges are true, flush & square.

Run a thin bead of Roket Card Glue along the top of the door frame & stick the stack of four strips (the roller shutter top box) on top of the door. Make sure the stack of four strips sit flat on the door top & is flush with the door frame sides. Turn the door over & run an extra bead of glue along the back of the joint line, as shown in the photo right.

Allow time for the glue to set before moving on to painting.

For painting we recommend applying a thin even coat of primer paint using an aerosol spray can primer paint. The likes of Plasikote primer paints available online & from the likes of The Range, Hobby Craft, Wickes, etc. We’ve used the Plasikote Super Primer which is quick-drying & gives a good base coating. Allow time for the primer coat to dry, see recommended instructions & drying times on the aerosol spray can.

For the topcoat use, acrylic paint aerosol spray can paint. The likes of Humbrol acrylics aerosol spray can paint, Plasikote aerosol spray can paint or similar are ideal.  We give two thin even coats of acrylic gloss red paint (by Humbrol) to our example for this walkthrough build guide. Please allow for the recommended drying time on your chosen paint manufacturers painting instructions before applying the second coat.

For painting, apply a thin even coat of primer paint using an aerosol spray can primer paint. The likes of Plasikote primer paints available online & from the likes of The Range, Wikes d.i.y, etc. We’ve used the Plasikote Super Primer which is quick-drying & gives a good base coating. Allow time for the primer coat to dry, see recommended instructions & drying times on the aerosol spray can.

For the topcoat use Humbrol acrylic paint & have opted for the gloss red colour in keeping with the Royal Mail red colour scheme for our scratch build Mail Depot. We gave two thin even coats of gloss red paint, again allowing for Humbrol’s recommended drying time before applying the second coat.

Once the paint has dried, apply an even bead of glue on the rear of the door, press & hold the door against the wall around 30 to 60 seconds to give the glue time to grab & start setting. Make sure the door sits square to the floor surface & of course the wall.

Now repeat the process with as many of the different roller shutter doors as required. Here you can see some of the LX280-OO roller shutter doors installed on the railway platform side of railway served depot building.

For a recessed doorway, omit the top roller shutter box when assembling the kit. Here you can see a recessed doorway with one of the standard pedestrian door roller shutter doors installed.

This now concludes the walkthrough kit build & paint guide.

Happy Modelling.
