Scale Model Scenery Kit Build Guides

LX291-OO Harbour / Quayside / Station Steps (Pack of 2) – OO/4mm/1:76

For this Scale Model Scenery Kits Build Guide we take a look at the LX291-OO Harbour / Quayside / Station Steps kit for OO/4mm/1:76 layouts. This kit is the perfect solution for anyone looking to add steps/stairs to a railway embankment/cutting or harbour/quayside scene. This easy to assemble laser cut mdf & laserboard kit contains enough parts to build two sets of steps 75mm tall, complete with decorative railings. It can be built as either two separate sets of stairs/steps or as a taller set of steps with landing halfway up.

The kit comes in our standard clear packet, with instruction sheet & laser cut parts sheets. This kit can be easily built & painted on evenings modelling session. Let us now take a look at how this kit is assembled.

Tools needed:

  • Cutting Mat
  • Craft knife with sharp blade,
  • Deluxe Materials Roket Card Clue or similar
  • Sanding stick
  • Paintbrush
  • Suitable acrylic paint of your choice of colour

Kit Contents

The kit comes in a clear packet complete with instructions, One laser parts sheet containing steps & landing parts, One sheet containing two side wall parts, and one sheet containing the railings. The photos right & below show the kit contents.

The kit assembly

Start by cutting & releasing the steps from the parts sheet. Use a craft knife with a new sharp blade to cut & release the steps from the parts sheet.

Lightly sand any pips flush on the step part sides using a sanding stick, as shown in the photo opposite right.

Next cut & release one of the step wall sides free from the parts sheet. Like the steps, lightly sand flush any pips on the wall part edges.

The wall is orientated so that the short top flat section as the name applies sits at the uppermost position, as shown in the photo opposite right.

The glue we’re using today is Deluxe Materials Laser Cut Kit Glue. We also recommend the likes of Deluxe Materials Super Phatic Glue & Roket Card Glue which are also suitable for this kit.

On each of the steps is a laser engraved marker line (highlighted with the arrows in the photo opposite right). This line is an alignment guideline to aid correct placement of each step. You’ll notice that on some steps they have laser-cut holes in them, these holes are for the railings to sit in.

Apply a thin bead of glue on side of the step as shown. Start off with one of the steps with the holes in it.

Next place one of the steps without the hole in it, on to the glued step with the hole in it, as shown in the photo opposite right. Use the laser engraved line on the glued step to align the step without the hole in it. Make sure that both steps are sitting flush on each side, as shown in the photo opposite right.

Apply glue to the bottom step section on the wall as shown in the photo opposite right.

Place the two steps onto the glued wall as shown in the photo opposite right. Allow time for the glue to set. Make sure that the steps sit flush with the end of the wall as shown in the photo opposite right.

Glue place three more steps without holes in them, into place as described above. On the fifth step, glue into place a step with a hole in, as shown in the photo opposite right.

Glue to place the remaining steps into place. The ones with the holes in are located at positions 1, 5, 9, 13, 17 & 21. As shown in the photo opposite right.

Make sure that the top step is flush & level with the top of the wall, as shown in the photo opposite right.

Now you have a choice to fitting the double-length top landing (marked in the photo with the grey circle), or the small top landing (marked in the photo with the orange X). We’re going with the small top landing marked with the orange X.

Now cut & remove the small top landing from the parts sheet. Lighty sand flush any pips from the parts side. Glue into place on the top of the stairs as shown in the photo opposite right, like the steps, make sure that the top landing is aligned up to laser cut alignment marker line on the top step. Make sure the holes (circled in orange) face to the outside as shown in the photo right.

Next cut & remove one long wall end piece from the parts sheet (marked with the orange X in the photo opposite right). Lightly sand flush any pips from the part edges.

Glue & fix into place the long end wall into place as shown in the photo opposite right. Make sure the end wall sits flush with the side wall & top landing.

With the railings removed from the parts sheet, paint them in primer. We’ve used Plastikote aerosol spray can primer paint to seal them.

Next cut & remove one of the long railings & one of the short end railings (marked with the orange ‘X’s) from the parts sheet.

Whilst the primer paint is drying on the railings, paint the steps & wall’s in a suitable concrete colour of your choice. We’ve used Concrete topcoat from Woodland Scenics for our steps here. We’ve applied two even thin coats of paint. Be sure not to fill the holes on the steps with paint.

With the railings dry, we then painted them in Humbrol acrylic aerosol spray can paint. The railings were given two coats of paint, following Humbrol’s painting guide instructions on the can. Once dry, the smaller railing is then glued into place on the top landing as shown in the photo opposite right.

The long railings were then glued & fitted into place as shown in the two photos shown opposite right. If required, apply weathering to your requirements & then install on to your layout embankment, harbour scene etc.

On our demo micro layout, we’ve installed this steps kit. However, we’ve taken it one stage further, by adding the second sidewall & second set of railings. The steps had some weathering applied using Tamiya Weathering Master pastels. The steps can be seen towards the right of the photo, seen the opposite.

This concludes our look at the building  & painting of this kit.
