Modelling Tip Of The Day – 80
This Modelling Tip Of The Day is an ongoing series, in which we’ll be posting a modelling tip that may be of use to the newbie right up to the seasoned modeller. Today’s tip is:
Mix Scales
Add force perspective to your layout scenery by mixing scales. This helps create the illusion of distance by using smaller scales towards the rear of the layout. This can be done using smaller scale items towards the rear of the scene. For example, if modelling in OO scale field, use N gauge trees & fencing along the rear of the field whilst using OO scale items along the front of the field. This fools the eye into thinking the field is much bigger than it really is.
Another way is to carefully position & use HO scale vehicles & buildings towards the rear of the layout, again this works very well into fooling the eye. The likes of Prieser & Noch HO scale figures work very well on OO scale layouts, so don’t dismiss them. In the photo below look carefully at the right of the picture, you’ll notice a police car by the gate. This vehicle is actually a HO scale.
On rolling stock such as wagons, certain ones like the continental sliding door vans can be used with your OO scale wagons. The size difference depending on wagon/model is not too much smaller than OO. This opens up a wider range of rolling stock to add to your wagon fleets.
