Modelling Tip Of The Day – 93

This Modelling Tip Of The Day is an ongoing series, in which we’ll be posting a modelling tip that may be of use to the newbie right up to the seasoned modeller. Today’s tip is:

Hairspray

One method that is popular with modellers for fixing scenic scatters, foilage, static grass, is hairspray. Use the cheap non-scented hairspray that is sold in aerosols. Spray the area before applying scenic scatter with hairspray, apply the scatter & then another spray with hairspray to add a final fix to the scatter material.

Using hairspray is great for weathering locos & rolling stock as well as structures on your layout such as girder bridges for example. Spay the area of the model you are working on with hairspray, then apply weathering powders to the model. Once you are happy with the weathering on your model, spray again with the hairspray to seal the weathering powder. The beauty of this method is that the the weathering can be removed by wiping a cotton ear bud/Q-tip soaked in water. Thus if your not happy with the weathered finish, it can be easily removed without damaging the model.
